The House itself

of Parliament in 1555 made it compulsory for everyone living in the twenty mile
wide Border Zone to build their own defences against reivers and cross-border
raiders. Not everyone complied but the owners of 'The Hill' did. In 1595 this
'bastle' was built and while it has all the comforts of the 21st century, its
original characteristics have been tastefully retained. Click on the following
