The Hill On The Wall - Surrounding Area
The Hill is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with much wildlife on display. In fact if you're lucky you may see the odd red squirrel around the property. Hadrian's Wall is an obvious 'must see' with the National Trail and visitor centres like Birdoswald Roman Fort just a short walk away. There are also other places to interest the discerning visitor such as the famous cities of Newcastle and Carlisle and the Lake District. All are an easy day trip away.
More locally are the market town of Brampton, Lanercost Priory, Talkin Tarn, Hexham and Corbridge, not to mention a visit to Kielder Water. For walkers, other than those walking The Wall, there are a host of walks into the North Pennines and The Border Country, and for cyclists the little used roads and country pubs provide miles of carefree days out. For the motorist there is much to explore in a largely 'undiscovered' area of great interest. The area has an abundance of wildlife in its unique and diverse landscapes and history to explore from the efforts of Hadrian's Legions to the Border Reivers and their presidential descendants, and to post-war rocket testing.

Birdoswald Roman Fort is very near to the Hill and has a long stretch of Hadrian's Wall along with the remains of a vey large Roman Fort which once would have been a very important centre for trade. The fort has also been linked to King Arthur.
Along the length of Hadrian's Wall are milecastles which were a kind of mini fort manned by a group of soldiers. These occur at regular intervals along the wall. The one pictured above is Poltross Burn - only 5 minutes from our guest house.
The busy market town of Brampton has a fascinating history. Bonnie Prince Charlie had his headquarters at what is now the shoe shop in High Cross Street during the siege of Carlisle in 1745.
This dramatic statue of the builder of Hadrian's Wall is to be seen in Brampton.
Talkin Tarn is a beauty spot where water sports can be practiced.
Lanercost was at one time the centre of government for England under the reign of Edward I. The beautiful old priory is well worth a visit.

This fascinating border fortress where Mary Queen of Scots was once confined is a must visit in the historic city of Carlisle.
