Hadrian's Wall
Being so close to Hadrian's Wall, The Hill on the Wall bed and breakfast attracts visitors from all over the world. Here are just a few of the multitude of interesting facts surrounding this unique World Heritage Site ....
When first built, Hadrian's Wall stretched from Wallsend-on-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, some 73 miles (117km).
The Wall was built by order of the great Emperor Hadrian - an order believed
to have been given during his visit to Britain in AD 122.
There has been much speculation about why the Wall was built but it's generally accepted that it was not a barrier to keep anyone out (or in!), but a boundary marker of what was then the Roman Empire.
Major excavation work has been carried out in recent years at a number of sites in Cumbria and Northumberland including:
Birdoswald,
Vindolanda,
Housesteads,
Corbridge and
Wallsend
We now have a section on the Hadrian's Wall National Trail
