Bed and breakfast Hadrian's Wall: The Hill

Bed and Breakfast on Hadrian's Wall

In an outstanding hilltop location overlooking the Irthing Valley and just 300 yards from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail at Birdoswald in Cumbria, this listed 16th century fortified farmhouse, or 'bastle', has three letting rooms. All are ensuite or with a private bathroom and there is a lounge and library for guests. With 1 acre of gardens and ample parking we provide comfort and a warm welcome for all who visit this historic and beautiful Scottish Borders area on the edge of Northumberland - Top 3 Award Cumberland News 'Best Place to Stay'

The House itself ..... An Act of Parliament in 1555 made it compulsory for everyone living in the twenty mile wide Border Zone to build their own defences against reivers and cross-border raiders. Not everyone complied but the owners of 'The Hill' did. In 1595 this 'bastle' was built and while it has all the comforts of the 21st century, its original characteristics have been tastefully retained.
